Thokozani was launched in 2002 as a project initiated by David Sonnenberg, third-generation owner of Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate in Wellington, South Africa. The purpose of Thokozani is to achieve sustainable economic empowerment and to make a discernible difference in the lives of the people who dedicate themselves to the company. In November 2020, Thokozani did a ground breaking deal with its mother company, Diemersfontein Wines and bought a 55% share in Diemersfontein. This means that the staff of the company now owns a majority share of Diemersfontein Wines.
